Keeping Red Rock Canyon NCA’s nearly 200,000 acres of climbing routes; hiking, cycling and equestrian trails; and visitor center and scenic loop amenities in great condition for our almost 2,000,000 annual visitors takes many willing hands and other resources. Friends of Red Rock Canyon provides the tools, materials and safety gear for Red Rock Canyon NCA projects (e.g., gloves, trash pickers, safety vests, trash buckets and bags, shovels, native plant seeds, fencing materials and more), and our 300+ volunteers provide much of the labor. Below are some of the regular volunteer opportunities available:
Close to 400,000 people come into the Visitor Center annually, seeking guidance on how to enjoy their visit. Share your favorite hikes, tips for seeing wildlife, and advice for staying safe in the Mojave Desert. Learn more
Serve as a field information desk volunteer by spending the morning at popular trailheads, greeting visitors, answering questions and educating them on Red Rock Canyon NCA happenings. Learn more
Care for our nine Mojave Desert tortoises and their habitat. Seven females live in one large habitat, and our two males have their own. Depending on the season, care can involve feeding, providing water, soaking, and weighing torts. Habitat volunteers also interact with Red Rock guests, educating them about our tortoises. Learn more
Clean out and refill four hummingbird feeders at the Visitor Center. Engage visitors and educate them about these pollinators.
Rangers select an area for each clean-up and bring all necessary gear. Volunteers spend 1.5 hours cleaning the designated area. It’s a beautiful way to get a little exercise, breath fresh air, and help our desert inhabitants. Learn more
Help with rock lining, fence building, trail repair, social trail and graffiti removal and other more labor-intensive efforts to improve our trails. Rangers will organize and provide all necessary gear and training. Learn more
Take a hike with a BLM tablet and record any maintenance needs (e.g., graffiti, overgrown trails, social trails, signage issues). Feel free to take gloves, graffiti wipes, a trash bag and a picker to also clean up the trail.
Create and distribute seed balls, remove invasive plants, and carryout other tasks regarding plants in the Red Rock Canyon NCA. Ranger will organize and provide all necessary materials and training. Learn more
Sweep the Dedication Walkway picnic area and/or the Visitor Center outdoor exhibit area, clean up any trash, and report any maintenance issues. Learn more
To get started, volunteers must attend a BLM Orientation, held quarterly. Jobs with an asterisk require additional training, some of which may be offered in conjunction with the BLM orientation. Check out our event calendar or contact us to register for the next BLM Orientation.
Note, if you would like a one-time volunteer opportunity or would like to volunteer before the next available BLM Orientation, check out our events calendar. Some annual volunteer events do not require BLM Orientation or other training (e.g., Earth Day, National Public Lands Day, Youth Day).
